You may have heard that we should take better care of the climate if we want to keep the earth healthy. I’m sure you would like to help, but it can be challenging to know where to start. It is also tricky when you want to go on holiday and enjoy the sun abroad – and the easiest way to get there is by plane. Of course, I’m not saying you shouldn’t travel by plane anymore, but it is a good idea to take care of the environment- and you can easily do that with small changes today and in your everyday life.
That’s why I have gathered 11 useful tips on how to help protect the environment in your everyday life, and it is much easier than you think.
1. Buy a reusable shopping bag
Instead of buying a plastic bag every time you go shopping, you can buy a reusable shopping bag and carry it every time you go to the store. It saves you money and the environment from plastic. It’s a Win-win situation!
Good news is, there are SO many beautiful reusable shopping bags on the market!
If you want, you can click the picture and follow the link to check them out.
2. Meat me halfway
It is becoming more and more popular to have meat-free days of the week, and there’s a reason for that. It is better for the environment and the carbon footprint, as beef contributes a lot to the climate culprit.
3. Change your toothbrush
It hardly gets any easier. By changing your toothbrush, you can spare the environment. Buy a toothbrush made from either recycled plastic or bamboo. Recycled plastic is a good option because they are made from all the plastic leftovers. Bamboo is 100% biodegradable and therefore does not harm the environment at all. This way you can brush your teeth with a clear conscience.
4. Shop at a thrift store
We all know that lovely feeling when we buy a new dress or a couple of delicious sneaks, but new clothes are often not very good for the environment. The answer to this problem is RECYCLING!
Quite often the clothes you can find at a thrift store is stuff other people bought by mistake. If you buy less new clothes, you also contribute to protecting the environment. Otherwise, you can look for eco-friendly clothing brands that care about the planet and produce sustainable clothing. Some of these brands are Tentree, Threads 4 Thought, Amour Vert, and PACT.
5. Use environmentally friendly sunscreen
The beautiful reefs are essential to the climate, but they are not doing so well because we as humans use too much sunscreen with harmful chemicals in them. Therefore, use sunscreen which is biodegradable, and remember to apply at least 30 minutes before you go into the water, so the sunscreen has dried into the skin.
Here are some brands I highly recommend
6. Use your bicycle
It is so much easier to take the car or bus to work. However, you should consider using our bicycle. As you rush off on the bike, it will benefit both the planet and your physical form.
7. Sort you waste
You can help the environment a lot if you sort our recyclable waste. When garbage is mixed when disposed we waste a lot of additional resources, but if you sort your garbage it will be possible to recycle it, and it emits less CO2.
It sounds easy, but it can feel very inconvenient if you are not quite sure how to do it.
I will post a blog post shortly where I give a guide on how to sort your waste. Therefore remember to subscribe to my newsletter via the box in the right sidebar to keep updated.
8. Turn off products on standby
Many of your electronic devices are unnecessarily on standby at night. Therefore turn the devices off at night, so they don’t use any unnecessary power.
You are probably not intending on watching a good series at three o’clock on a Wednesday night anyway. This simple action will help both the climate and your wallet.
9. Have a quickie
… Not like that ;). When you are taking a bath, you should do it as quickly as possible. In just one minute, 10 liters of water pours out of the shower. Therefore it is a good idea to take short baths or turn down the heat. It will save you money and help save the environment.
10.Pick up trash on your walk
I know it sounds weird, but it is an excellent way to get exercise while collecting trash and help cleaning the environment. Listen to a good book or music on your phone while walking around in your area; everyone benefits from this one.
You will be surprised at how much trash is just lying around. Maybe you will even inspire others to clean up a little more when they see you picking up garbage.
11. Do you REALLY need that?
When shopping, it’s a good idea to ask yourself if you REALLY need the things you are putting in your basket. Maybe you don’t need to own yet another pair of cheap underwear or another necklace you will never wear.
Every small step counts
You might be thinking that these things do not make a difference and that you are only ONE person. BUT the small steps also count and we all must start somewhere. The more people who use climate-friendly tips in their everyday life, the faster we can take care of the environment and eventually help the earth become healthier.
Therefore, it is an obvious opportunity for you to start with one of the things and then continue with more. It may well be that some of the items in this list are a bit tricky to get started with, but even if it is difficult for you now, it is good for the planet in the long term run.
